Over the Edge for Recovery is an annual event held at Silo Point in Baltimore, Maryland. Each year particpants gain sponsors to support the the Gaudenzia Women and Children's Center. The Center offers long-term addiction treatment for pregnant, parenting mothers, and their children.
Sponsors not only gain the satisfaction of supporting an important program, but they get to witness the participants rappell down the 23 story Silo Point building. Brittany and Krystal participated in this event in 2009 and 2010 (respectively) and raised over $2,000 for the Gaudenzia Women and Children's Center.
+ See Brittany Rappell!
In the spirit of giving back, the Shoaf family was elated to participate in the Father’s Day 5K. Not only did Joel, Andrea and the twins cross the finish line, so did both of Andrea’s parents and Joel’s mother. The race benefits the GBMC NICU, wher e the Shoaf twins spent the first 6 weeks of their lives surrounded by the love and care of the NICU nursing staff. As they have grown and developed, at 8 months they were ready to do their part to give back and help give other families the support and care needed for their own tiny miracles to thrive.

Lorax was a tee box sponsor and had folks on the course playing and volunteering. While the team didn’t place in the prizes, everyone was a winner, as a great time was had by all, and all donated generously to support the mission of BHGH - to help academically capable and motivated children-in-need meet their full potential and become men and women for others by providing value-centered, family-like homes, opportunities and education through college. BHGH Baltimore leads the 19 BHGH homes with the highest house GPA! It’s an honor to support these hard working young men as they achieve their fullest potential.

The Trek is a 5K tour of the two stadium jewels in Baltimore City, Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium, going up and down the upper levels of Camden Yards, and all about the Ravens home turf, finishing at the 50 yard line. Lorax was able to raise a modest contribution through the sustained harassment of colleagues and family members, and finished the race in fine standing, with a time of 1:31, in 267th place. Yes, there were more than 267 participants. 285 to be exact. (It should be noted however, that multiple side-trips were taken through the stadiums for curiosity’s sake, and portions of the walking tour did involve gratuitous cartwheels). Overall it was a great day, and we are looking forward to participating and contributing next year, with a slightly better finish time! Or more cartwheels!
With everyone fresh from the USGBC festivities of last evening, the crew decided to do well by doing some good at Kennedy Krieger, participating in the Block Kids Program. Block Kids gives each child a similar batch of construction materials (Legos, string, cardboard, aluminum foil, rocks) and the children are tasked with creating their own original building. Each Lorax volunteer was assigned to a different classroom and worked with each child within that room to construct their building. Different trades set up stations in the gym to demonstrate how bricks are laid, how plumbing is laid out, how pulleys work… the Lorax team learned as much as the kids, maybe more. At the end, a winner was chosen from each classroom, but each Lorax volunteer felt all the kids were winners!
Habitat for Humanity of Howard County works in partnership with people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need. By providing simple, decent, affordable housing this organization helps hard-working low-income families realize their dream of home ownership. Lorax has supported several of their fund raising events, such as the Habitat for Humanity Orioles game and the Earth Day "Stomp Out Homelessness" school campaign. Lorax will continue to give time and energy to support this group of volunteers as they grow and expand their reach into the community to make a difference in so many peoples’ lives.
